Platinotype Company, The | Improved Key Camera | Other | Quarter Plate

PATENT BOX. 1891. With its distinctive cross-hatched finish, this was a historic hand-camera, as its users could carry an unlimited number of plates, in dedicated holders, and load and unload them in daylight, by way of a light-tight cylindrical coupling which connected plate holder to camera. My 120 years old camera was without holders when I acquired it. The original "Key" Camera was introduced in 1890, from an 1889 patent by W H Smith and W Willis. The "Improved Key Camera" followed a little later. (See Brian Coe's "Cameras", p.43 and Channing and Dunn, "British Cameras" p.102.).
