Ensign Ltd | The Empress | English | Half Plate

1904-1911 | ENGLISH FIELD CAMERA Founded in 1834, and after numerous voluntary liquidations and re- amalgamations under various names, the firm that was by this time Houghton-Butcher (Great Britain) Ltd., changed its name to Ensign Ltd. in 1904, using its Ensign factory, but continued to operate, at its Walthamstow works, as the Houghton-Butcher Manufacturing Co. Ltd. From 1904 to 1911, Ensign used the style of badge seen on this camera, then it changed to a different type showing a white ensign flag. I have learned, via researching this camera, that Houghtons ran a line of King, Queen, Empress, Duchess, etc. that I had been unaware of. Whilst not up to the standard of their top-of-the-range Tropical Sandersons, Victos etc., this conventional double-extension "Empress" camera has a good standard of construction.
